Stood by a window at a friend’s flat, the phone camera flipped to selfie mode for some reason, and there it was. Flaky skin by my nose. A forehead that looked tired. A watch tan I’d apparently been carrying around for two years. Nobody told me, obviously. Guys don’t tell each other this stuff. We’ll talk about cricket, fuel prices, whose boss is worse, but “bro, your skin looks dry” never comes up.

What happened next surprised me a little. Once I started caring about my skin, I started caring about what sat against it. The vest under my shirt. The track pants I basically live in on weekends (and some weekdays, no judgment please). Skin, fabric, sweat, heat. It’s all one thing, really.

So that’s what this post is about. Three everyday things, one idea. Nothing expensive. No ten-step routine with products named like perfume. Just small stuff that quietly decides whether you feel okay in your own body by 4 p.m.
Grab your chai. Let’s go.

class="zpheading zpheading-style-none zpheading-align-left " data-editor="true">Why is everybody suddenly talking about men’s skincare?

Because it stopped being embarrassing. That’s the main thing.

Not long ago a guy owning moisturizer was either a secret or a punchline. Now it sits in the gym bag next to the shaker bottle. Nobody blinks. The money side shows it too. IMARC puts India’s male grooming market at about USD 2.62 billion this year, up from 2.45 billion in 2025, with a forecast of roughly 4.46 billion by 2034. You can look at their market numbers here. Different research firms disagree on the exact figure, but they all lean the same way. Up and to the right.

What’s pushing it? The report points to skincare becoming normal for Indian men, online grooming brands multiplying, and gym and wellness culture creating demand for post-workout products. The gym part feels right to me. Once you’re sweating regularly you notice breakouts on your back, then your shoulders, then you’re reading ingredient lists at 1 a.m. like it’s an exam. (Guilty. Salicylic acid, specifically.)

Social media plays a part as well. We all see each other’s faces in sharp video all day long now. Hard to ignore your own pores after that.

Also, here’s something I liked. Mintel’s 2026 report on Indian men’s grooming mentions rising awareness of skincare among male consumers, and it flags dry skin as a big doorway into more serious skincare. Makes total sense. Nobody wakes up wanting a routine. They wake up with itchy, tight skin and finally go buy a cream.

So no, you’re not behind. Plenty of people around you are still figuring it out, just quietly.

If that’s not you, they fall apart around day four.

What lasts? A face wash. A moisturiser. Sunscreen. Done. I know it sounds a bit sad, but the dermatologist-friendly version of men’s skincare really is that dull, and dull is what you’ll still be doing next March.

Face wash trips people up. The squeaky-clean feeling seems like proof it worked. It isn’t. Squeaky usually means the stuff stripped away more than dirt. If your face feels tight like cling film afterwards, switch to something milder. Oily skin included. Scrubbing harder just makes it angrier.

Moisturiser gets the “but I’m oily” argument. Fine. Oily skin still gets dehydrated, and a light gel won’t turn you into a diya. Dry-skin guys need something creamier, particularly in winter. Delhi winters have humbled me more than once. The air just takes moisture off you.

Sunscreen gets its own section in a bit.

If you’d like to look at options without ten tabs open, the skincare range at Innerman is a manageable place to start. Read what each product says it’s for. Pick one cleanser and one moisturiser. One each. Not six.

What would I’d bin? Anything promising a new skin tone in a week. Anything that burns and calls it “working.” Anything your cousin swears by without knowing your skin. Skin is stubbornly personal. What cleared his face might wreck yours.

One habit tip, because habits beat products. Keep the bottles where you’ll see them. Next to the toothbrush. If the moisturiser lives in a drawer, it stays in the drawer. I’ve tested this, sadly.

For years, I refused. It felt sticky, it smelled strange, and I’d decided I wasn’t the sort to burn.

Then I read what it does and felt silly.

The American Academy of Dermatology keeps saying the same thing: wear a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or above on any skin your clothes don’t cover. That’s straight from the AAD’s own page. “Broad-spectrum” is the part people skip over. It means protection against UVA, which ages skin, along with UVB, which burns it. Most of us only think about burning. The slow stuff, the dark spots and the early lines, comes from UVA.

Now the number thing. SPF 30 blocks around 97% of UVB. So SPF 100 isn’t a force field. How much you put on and how often you top up matters more. The AAD says to apply it roughly fifteen minutes before heading out and again every two hours, or straight after sweating. Is that annoying in traffic? Yes. Is a quick reapply before a long outdoor lunch really too much to ask? Probably not.

A caveat, because I don’t want to oversell. These guidelines come from American dermatologists. India’s sun is a different animal in lots of places, and I’m not a doctor. If you’ve got a skin condition, a family history, or you’re just unsure, one visit to a local dermatologist is worth more than this entire blog.

What I do know is this. The sunscreen that works is the one you’ll wear. Texture decides it. Gels and light lotions suit guys who hate heavy creams. Test a small patch first. And keep one in your bag, because a tube in the bathroom cabinet does nothing for you at 2 p.m. on the road.

Also, ears. Neck. The back of the neck if you ride a bike. Indian summer tan lines are legendary, and not in a good way.

class="zpheading zpheading-style-none zpheading-align-left " data-editor="true">Dry skin, post-gym skin, and other things nobody warns you about

Funny thing about guys and skincare. Almost nobody starts because of “glow.” They start because something bugs them. A rash. A pimple that won’t leave. Skin that itches the second you step out of the shower.

Dry skin is the usual trigger. Remember the Mintel point? It matches what I’ve seen around me. Someone gets sick of flaky arms or cracked lips, buys a basic moisturiser, notices a change in two weeks, and boom, convert.

Part of why dryness hits so many people is what we do in the bathroom. Long hot showers feel wonderful and wreck your skin. Harsh soap on the face, same story. Lukewarm water helps. Wash your face separately with something mild. Pat dry, don’t rub. Moisturiser goes on while the skin is still a bit damp. Not exciting advice. Works anyway.

Post-workout skin is its own thing. Sweat sitting under tight clothes is basically an invitation to clogged pores. Shower soon after training, or at least get out of those wet clothes. That’s where clothing starts creeping into skincare, and I’ll come to it properly in a minute.

Beard guys, a quick one. The skin under a beard gets dry and itchy, and people ignore it. Work a little moisturiser down to the skin, not only the hair. It sorts out more itching than you’d think.

Last thing here, and I mean it. Listen to your skin. Redness that doesn’t settle, painful bumps, patches that won’t heal, and a mole that changes shape. That’s not “try another cream” territory. That’s “see a doctor” territory. I’d rather overreact than shrug it off.

Okay, tangent time, because I think the vest is hugely underrated.

Most guys treat it like a utility item. Buy a pack, wear till they go see-through, never think about it. But the vest touches your skin all day. Under the office shirt. Under a kurta. Under a tee on a packed bus in June. If skincare is about looking after your skin, then the vest is part of the routine whether you planned it or not.

It soaks up sweat so your shirt doesn’t show patches. It sits between rough fabric and your body. It keeps collars cleaner. Not glamorous. Just useful.

Fabric is where it gets interesting. An AP piece from this year went through it, and I liked how honest it was. Researchers quoted there say cotton and linen-type fibres generally feel more breathable, and that a looser, open weave lets air reach skin so sweat can evaporate. Read the whole thing in AP’s article on fabrics for heat. The best part, to me, is the admission that no fabric is perfect. Cotton absorbs sweat but turns heavy once soaked, while engineered polyester shifts moisture along and dries quicker.

So which? Depends on your day. Air-conditioned office, moderate sweat? Soft cotton is lovely. Riding to work in May, or hauling bags through a metro? A cotton blend might dry faster and feel better. I wear cotton most days and don’t complain, but I’d be lying if I said I never felt that damp-vest misery on a long commute.

Fit matters as much. Too tight, and it traps heat and rubs under the arms. Too loose and it bunches under your shirt. Snug but not clingy. And retire the ones with holes. I know the old favourite feels amazing. It’s also done.
Time for a restock? Have a look atInnerman’s vest and t-shirt section.

This is why I stuffed three topics into one post.

Skin that rubs against rough or damp fabric all day gets irritated. You’ll see it as redness on the chest, itch under the arms, and small bumps across the back. A lot of guys go hunting for a new cream when the real problem is the thing they’re wearing.

I’m not saying a vest cures acne. It doesn’t, and anyone claiming that is selling something. I’m saying sitting in a sweat-soaked vest for hours won’t do your skin any favors. Changing out of it after a workout or a sticky commute is one of those tiny habits that helps. Same with washing properly. Detergent left in fabric can bother sensitive skin, so rinse well.

There’s a sunscreen angle too. Sunscreen shares space with fabric, sweat, and friction. Some rubs off on your collar. Normal. It’s one more reason to reapply during the day. Light, thin fabrics also make that easier to manage, if you’ve ever stained a white collar. (I have. Several.)

And a small satisfying bit. A decent vest makes your shirts last longer. Sweat and body oil are what slowly kill collars and underarms. The vest takes the hit instead. For the price of a vest you’re protecting something much more expensive.

My mental model is basic. Skin first. Vest touches it. Everything else sits on top.

Confession. For years, my idea of track pants was “that grey thing I sleep in.”

Then a friend showed up to a casual dinner in a clean, well-fitted dark pair with a plain tee and looked sharper than half the room in jeans. Small moment. Changed how I thought about them.

They’ve moved out of the gym. Airports, weekend errands, work-from-home calls where only the top half of you exists. Good ones are comfortable, stretchy, and just structured enough that you don’t look like you’ve given up. Bad ones bag at the knee, pill after three washes, and have that strange shiny finish.

What do I check? A waistband that stays put, with a drawcord that actually does something. Fabric with some stretch but no cling. A slight taper so the hems don’t swallow your shoes. Pockets deep enough for a phone, because dropping one on a gym floor is a special kind of sadness.

Fabric logic is the same as with vests. Humid weather wants something light that lets air through. Cooler months suit a slightly heavier knit. Outdoor workouts? Quick-drying material. Mostly lounging and errands? Soft cotton blends are great.

Colour is the cheap win. Black, navy, charcoal, olive. They go with nearly everything and hide sweat better than light gray. (Grey track pants have exposed more secrets than any garment in history.) Save the loud stripes for when you’re feeling brave.

Shopping? Take a look track pants. Check length and fabric, and think about where you’ll wear them. Gym pants and lounge pants aren’t always the same pair. That’s allowed.

One skin note, since that’s the thread. Tight, non-breathable bottoms worn for hours can cause chafing, especially in Indian summers. Pick a size that lets you move, change after workouts, and wash them regularly. Dull. Your skin will still thank you.

Cotton breathes well but gets heavy when wet. Engineered synthetics dry faster. Pick for your day.

Good track pants work well outside the gym now. Fit, fabric and colour do the heavy lifting.

Add products one at a time, and see a doctor for anything painful, persistent, or changing.

Q: Do I need moisturiser if my skin is oily?
A: Usually, yes. Oily skin can still be dehydrated. A light gel won’t leave you greasy. If your face feels tight after washing, that’s your hint.

Q: What SPF should I use every day in India?
A: The AAD advises broad-spectrum, water-resistant, SPF 30 or higher. Going much above that adds little, so applying enough and reapplying matters more. A local dermatologist can tailor it to your skin and city.

Q: How often should I wash my face?
A: Morning and night works for most guys. Wash again after heavy sweat or a dusty ride. Harsh products used too often just dry you out.

Q: Cotton or polyester vest for Indian summers?
A: Neither wins outright. Cotton breathes but gets heavy when soaked. Engineered polyester dries faster but can feel clammy if it’s poorly made. Blends are a sensible middle for long, sweaty days.

Q: How tight should a vest be?
A: Snug, not restrictive. If it leaves marks, digs in, or feels hot and clingy, size up or go lighter.

Q: Can I wear track pants outside the gym without looking sloppy?
A: Yes. Clean, tapered, dark and plain, in fabric that holds shape. Add a simple tee and decent shoes, and it looks intentional.

Q: How long before skincare shows results?
A: Dryness can improve in a couple of weeks. Breakouts and uneven tone take longer, often a couple of months. If something stings or makes you break out, stop and ask a doctor.

Q: Should I see a dermatologist before starting?
A: Not for basics like cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen. For stubborn acne, painful bumps, rashes, or changing moles, yes.
